I am always keen on trying out new skin care products that are not only affordable but are believed to produce good results. I had seen the Portia M Facial Skin Range being mentioned a few times on the #GirlTalkZA hashtag on Twitter. However, I didn’t really pay much attention because I was already using another range of skincare products from another brand, which I was fine with. And somehow, I don’t know why, I was also under the misconception that Portia M products were quite expensive.
I must mention that I have combination skin. I also have uneven skin tone which has been looking dull as of late. I don’t really have pimples or acne, besides the occasional hormonal breakout around my mouth area.
So, two weeks ago I was doing my monthly shop at Clicks and I was about to pick up my usual brand when I saw Portia M products on the bottom shelf. I nearly keeled over in the aisle when I saw how affordable they were!
Portia M Skin Solutions is a proudly South African, black-owned skincare brand. So together with the affordability of the products, I was sold. I put the face wash and toner in my basket. When I got to the till, the cashier told me that there was a 3 for 2 special, so I sprinted back to the shelf and picked up the face cream.
I really like the feel of the bottles and tub – very light and not ‘bulky’. My only gripe is that the text on the labels for the toner and face wash do start rubbing off after a while, which not only doesn’t look that great but you can’t then go back and read the ingredients, benefits, etc. The overall layout of the label is clean and the product description and claims are clear.
I was also pleasantly surprised to not be greeted by the strong Marula scent. The packaging of the products that I bought all say “Marula” so I automatically assumed there would be a scent as well. However, it is fragrance-free – which is great for people with sensitive skin or those who don’t like fragranced products.
So when I bought the face wash it was R50,49. It comes in a 200 ml bottle and claims to be a purifying and mild cleanser. I prefer my lotions, face washes, etc to have a pump mechanism as opposed to being in a tub or tube, so the face wash scored extra points with regards to that. The actual product inside is a clear, gel-like liquid which doesn’t really create a lather. After the first use, I really liked how ‘not dry’ my skin felt. Normally my face feels quite tight after a wash and I try to justify it by saying that it’s because the face wash ‘did its job well’. This time my face didn’t only feel soft but it also felt ‘fresh’ – like my skin was breathing.
The toner has to be my favourite out of the 3 products that I bought – and I will tell you why. The toner which I had been using before had such a strong chemical/alcohol smell that initially it took me a few days to get used to it. My skin never reacted to it though so it was just the smell that was off-putting. So I was really pleased to have found such a mild toner at a good price. The Portia M toner claims to be clarifying and rich in natural fruit extracts. This was R47,49 at the time that I bought it and it also comes in a lean 200 ml bottle. But because it was a 3 for 2 special and this was the cheapest of the 3, I got it for free.
The day cream is the product that I picked up when I had to dash back from the till to the aisle. It comes in a 50 ml tub and was R56,49 upon purchase. It claims to be an anti-blemish day cream suitable for oily skin. A bonus is that it has an SPF 20. It’s a mattifying yet hydrating cream which does a good job in holding off the oil but also leaves your skin soft and smooth. So after cleansing and toning, I apply this cream. If I am putting on makeup, then I proceed to do so and if not, then that’s my face done.
Two weeks to the day of using this range and I am very happy with how my skin looks and feels. I cannot stop touching my face (which is NOT recommended by the way!) and just reveling in the smoothness and softness of my skin. It also looks a little bit brighter than before, which I am pleased with.
As mentioned, I never really had pimples but I think this range did a great job in just refining my skin a little bit more. I am super impressed with how mild the products were as well – no harsh smells and tingling sensations upon usage. The only downside which I commented on earlier is the packaging and the fading text. As I was typing this review, I had the product in front of me but the ml’s of the toner has rubbed off so I had to go to the website just to check that info.
But would I recommend? Yes! A great way to get more bang for your buck.
Portia M Skin Solutions also has a range of other products such as serums, body creams, and lotions which you can check out on their website.
