Take A Sho’t Left To Airport Craft Brewers

I honestly don’t know why it took me so long to try out Airport Craft Brewers at O.R International Airport in Johannesburg. I regularly travel that side on one-day trips for business purposes. When I am done with my meetings for the day, I head on over to the airport in Kempton Park to wait for my flight out back to Durban. Most of the time, I hang around in the airline lounge until I have to board however this time around, I decided to rather try out the restaurant that I always scurry past when I land and rush off to my meetings.

Just  a bit of background on Airport Craft Brewers: this restaurant and pub was founded in 2014. It is the first of its kind in the African continent to have an on-site brewing plant inside an airport.  They promise to offer you the very best in premium hand crafted brews as well as hearty, South African meals. There are two ACB restaurants in O.R Tambo International airport: one on the “landside” (which is before the boarding gates) and one on the “airside” (after the boarding gates).

I was greeted by friendly waitresses and I ordered my usual fave – Gin and Tonic – while I scrolled through some emails. I have to add here that even though ACB claim to cater for travellers, there was one plug point on the booth where I was seated and it was already occupied. So I definitely  believe that there is room to include more plug points for travellers’ convenience.

I found the menu to be quite diverse with breakfast, burger, tapas and salad varieties. Did I mention that it is quite affordable too? I ordered a chicken basket that contained 4x BBQ chicken wings, 3x chicken samoosas and 3x chicken kebabs served with chips on the side for R140. My gin & tonic, which came in a small glass, was about R40.  I was also interested to see that the baskets and tapas section of the menu come with a recommendation as to which beverage (beer) best pairs with your meal. I had, of course, already selected mine – which was probably not the recommended option.

The basket was substantial and indeed hearty. I was also pleased with the ambiance as well in terms of not being too rowdy and busy. Superb quality of food and service from this hidden gem.
